The TOEFL test is conducted by the ETS (Educational Testing Service), which is based in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. ETS offers 5 different types of TOEFL exams:

TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test)

TOEFL iBT is the premier test that assesses the academic English skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing modules according to the application of the language in an actual classroom. It is a computer-based test which takes approximately 2 hours to complete.

Scoring Of TOEFL iBT

The total score possible is 0 - 120. Speaking and Writing section responses are evaluated by a combination of AI scoring and ETS certified raters. TOEFL iBT scores will be available in the student's ETS account 4-8 days after the test date and are valid for 2 years.

Upcoming Changes in TOEFL Scoring

TOEFL iBT score reports will have a new 1-6 scale in half-point increments from 21 January, 2026 onwards. The candidate will get 4 section scores, as well as an overall score, on the 1-6 scale. For a 2 year transition period after January 2026, the candidate will also receive a comparable overall score on the 0-120 scale.
